Family Therapy for Addiction Treatment

When you’re battling drug addiction, part of the treatment process involves therapy. Patients go through therapy in different settings. Individual therapy, group therapy with other people battling addiction, and family therapy for addiction are all part of the process. Family therapy is crucial for those who not only want to battle their addiction but also stay sober for the long haul. Let’s take a look at what family therapy is, how it can help and why it’s crucial when you’re going through the recovery process.

What is Family Therapy for Addiction?

Traditional therapy focuses on the thoughts and behaviors of the individual. Family therapy focuses on relationships and aims to understand the experiences of the entire family as a unit. During family therapy treatment, therapists look to make relationships clearer. Their goal is to make those relationships stronger and to help in the recovery process.

During family therapy sessions, the therapist will also look at how substance abuse is embedded in the dynamics of the family. Many times there may be something that happens within the family or among family members that serve as the catalyst for someone’s addiction. Family members will also be educated about substance abuse and learn what behaviors may trigger their loved one’s addiction. Through the process, they learn how to avoid those behaviors and what to do to give support instead.

When families opt out of therapy, it may actually encourage the patient’s addictive behavior by making it more difficult to get sober and stay sober.

How Can Family Therapy for Addiction Help?

Studies have shown that patients who take part in family therapy sessions have a greater chance of getting sober and staying sober versus patients who don’t. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, family therapy can help patients in many ways.

Keeps Family Members Engaged

One of which is to keep family members engaged and motivated to help during treatment. Because each patient is different, their course of treatment and therapy in drug rehabilitation Arizona will be different. Family therapy sessions help to keep each person on course, especially when things become difficult.

Teaches How to Deal with Feelings

There are many emotions that both patients and family members will experience during the rehabilitation process. Fear, anger, sadness, and resentment are just a few that can come up. During family therapy sessions all participants learn how to deal with these feelings effectively.

Allows Family Members to Ask Questions and Understand the Addiction

Addiction can be scary for family members as well as patients. They need to have a place to go to get their questions answered honestly and accurately. Family therapy sessions provide this type of environment.

Improves Family Communication

When communication breaks down it can truly affect a family. Many times people don’t know what to say or don’t say anything at all for fear of saying the wrong thing. Family therapists can help to break down these barriers and teach family members how to communicate better and offer support.

These are just a few of the ways that family therapy can help patients as they navigate their way through treatment and recovery. In its guide “Substance Abuse Treatment and Family Therapy”, The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports that another way family therapy helps is by preventing substance abuse from occurring from generation to generation. Through family therapy, each person also learns their strengths and how those strengths can help their loved one battle their addiction.
